Professor Tony Ukam is both a recognized scholar and a front line legal practitioner in Nigeria and internationally. He graduated with an LLB degree from the University of Cross River State, Uyo -UNICROSS, (now Uniuyo), and was called to the Bar in December, 1990.
He was President of the National Association of Cross River State Students (NACRISS) between 1987–89; President of Press Club, University of Cross River State; and Ras of Reggae Club. He was the Founder and President of Erei Youth Forum, Biase Local Government Area. As President of Men’s Fellowship of Liberty Gospel Church, he founded the now popular Heaven Race for Christ in 1998.
In 1991 he vied for the House of Representative for Akamkpa Federal Constituency, and in 1993 he vied as Chairmanship aspirant for Biase Local Government Area before the Abacha coup sent him back to his private legal practice. In the Legal field, he held advocacy tenaciously without looking back and today, he has published over a hundred topical issues and several law books, reports, christian literatures, journals, articles, etc.
He runs an Intellectual Scholarship Scheme where he donates research books and resourceful materials worth millions of naira to over a thousand undergraduates in Cross River State, and several secondary/tertiary institutions across Nigeria. He founded the now popular Footnote Law Reports. He is a consummate author of several Christian Literatures, and author of the best-selling Christian Lawyers Literature: “Can Lawyers Make Heaven?” He’s also author of the prestigious “Doyen Bar Encyclopaedia”, a chronicle of Legal History in Nigerian from 1888 to date.
He made history in the Nigerian Legal Landscape as the first Nigerian Lawyer to lead the Plaintiff’s case in the first ever sitting of a Nigerian court outside the shores of Nigeria, in New York, USA, in December, 2007. He was the founder and Chairman of Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON) Cross River State Chapter, from 2001-06. He also emerged in a landslide victory as the historic Chairman of the Calabar Bar (The Doyen Bar) 2006-09.
As a natural artist, in 2003 Dr. Ukam invented a prototype house called “Orak House” which can be assembled and/or dismantled/re-assembled within a day.
Dr. Ukam has several awards in Nigeria and abroad. He is a holder of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON, (2005) and JP (2008); African Development Merit Award in South Africa (June 2010) for his development of law in Africa; Kwame Nkrumah Africa Leadership Award in Ghana (2010) Ambassador of Peace Gold Award (2010); He was equally bestowed with the honors of Global Award of Excellence and appointed a Patron of the Global Initiative for Development and Conflict Resolution (GIDCR) Incorporated, for his great service to God and Humanity. Cited in the Nigerian book of Great people, PSR Magazine. He is currently the International UN-POLAC Legal Adviser for Africa. He has travelled far and wide, including Togo, Ghana, Republic of Benin, Cameroun, Kenya, Britain, Turkey, Palestine, USA, Israel, etc.
He has an astonishing state of the art chambers complex in the city of Calabar, and has produced over eighty lawyers between 1991–2010 (who passed through his chambers on tutelage). He is married with six children.
